Network drivers are those who push and lead the network to take action and get work done, either because they are passionate about the work or because it is their job. Often, drivers who are involved because of a passion for the issue stay engaged because they want the network to support them either now or in the future on a specific project. However, drivers should have the interests of the network at the heart of their work, allowing it to become a tool to serve all people in the network. Drivers often contribute to the content of the network’s communications, assist in focusing the direction of network initiatives and drive the schedule for outreach.

Core Competencies for Network Drivers

• Capacity to build a reputation for leadership.
• A basic understanding of the principles of network building and the types of problems that networks are good at solving. (See recommended reading in the Network Basics section and the bibliography for more).
• Strong written and oral communications skills, in order to contribute meaningfully to the content of the communication in the network.
• Willingness to provide feedback to shape the network.
