Network principals are the people who serve as the catalysts for shaping the network and providing the initial magnetism that drives people to connect to each other. They are the “executive producers” that validate the network’s existence. At the outset, these are the people who guide the investigation process that is needed to start or evaluate a network. Network principals can organize funding and help to create the initial formal or informal definitions of network boundaries and protocols for the purpose and acceptable use of the network. In some cases, the principals jump-start the invitation process and invest in the trust and communication – the Seven Elements – that enable the network to start to evolve.

Core Competencies for Network Principals

• Capacity to convene stakeholders or inspire participation.
• Ability to frame and champion the concept of networks as a structure for impact.
• Comfort with risk-taking as an investment strategy.
• Familiarity with the idea of distributed leadership, and respect that the field has the answer or the intelligence to collectively discover it.
• Ability to identify and analyze trends.

Ability to identify leaders and key hubs in a field and bring together leaders who are not well connected.
