A FUNDER’S ROLE IN NETWORKS
Over the course of a network’s life, funders can occupy different roles at different times. Most often funder staff serve in the role of Network Principal, which is a powerful role (see description above). If, as a funder, you plan to take on any of the above roles, consider the following caveats:
- The network model can unintentionally become centralized due to an imbalance of power.
- A network can turn into a top-down communications channel if there isn’t equal participation and leadership from people who are not funders in the network.
- Participation might not be based on value received, but rather an unspoken pressure such as the hope for more funding.
